Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann was founded by musicians in 1951 to promote Irish traditional music and culture.

Comhaltas now has a membership of several million people. It has over 450 branches on 4 continents and operates in 15 countries.

The first Fleadh Cheoil was organised in Mullingar, County Westmeath. Within a few years, this had become a National Festival attended by thousands of traditional musicians, singers and dancers from all over Ireland and soon also from overseas.

Branches of Comhaltas have formed in every county in Ireland and also abroad, organising classes, concerts, and sessions in local communities.

Comhaltas is now a world-wide organisation, with active branches in the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan and elsewhere. In fact, there are hundreds of branches in 15 countries on 4 continents and very vibrant branches in:

  • Melbourne
  • Perth
  • Sydney
  • Canberra
  • Adelaide.
